Sony manufactures both the Playstation Portable (PSP) gaming system and the PSP Go. The PSP Go saw release in Western Europe and North America on October 1, 2009. In Japan, the PSP Go was released on November 1, 2009. The PSP Go isn't a replacement for your PSP. The PSP is a separate product that will continue to be supported, manufactured and sold by Sony.
The PSP Go differs from the PSP by including an internal flash memory of 16GB, which can store videos, games, and other types of media. This is included, but the usual UMD drive has been left out. You can use a Memory Stick Micro (M2) card to expand this memory up to a full 32 GB. The battery within the PSP Go cannot be replaced or removed by the player, unlike previous models. Another benefit is that the PSP Go is less than half the size of the original PSP, and cuts that weight almost in half. It's also 35% more compact and weighs 16% less than the newest PSPs. The PSP Go includes a 480x272 LCD screen that measures 3.8". Previous models of the PSP have featured larger screens, measuring in at 4.3", and the same 480x272 pixels. The screen of the PSP Go can be slid upwards to gain access to the control panel. The sliding mechanism and the shape of the unit are reminiscent of the Mylo COM-2 by Sony.
All games played on the PSP Go must be downloaded directly at the Playstation store, as there is no UMD drive. This is the only way that games for the PSP Go will be distributed, while the general PSP console can use both downloaded content as well as traditional games.
You can access the Playstation store in three ways. You can use your PSP Go to download games directly, you can use your PS3 to download games, or alternately, you can use your computer and download games using Media Go software, only for Windows. The PSP Go will be fully compatible with the full library of PSP games which already exist in the Playstation store. Every PSP game which is manufactured on UMDs will also be accompanied by downloadable versions in the Playstation store after October of 2009, in addition to many games which previously existed only in UMD form.
