The PSP, or Playstation Portable, is a handheld and portable version of the larger Playstation gaming console produced by Sony. This game system was introduced in stages globally, begining in Japan on December 12, 2004, then in North America on March 24, 2005 and finally in the PAL region on September 1, 2005.
The PSP uses an optical disc format, Universal Media Disc (UMD) as its primary storage medium, and as the first handheld game to do so found immediate success. The PSP also boasts a large viewing screen for more enjoyable game play, multi-media features and it can even be connected to the PlayStation 3, other PSPs or even the internet, making it a highly versatile unit.
However, the Nintendo DS continued to outsell the PSP. It should be noted that the PSP is "the most successful non-Nintendo handheld game system ever sold". In September, 2007 the PSP was remodeled and the new version was slimmer, lighter and appealingly titled Slim and Lite and this model was exceedingly popular in both the United Kingdom where sales quadrupled the week after it was released and in North American were sales rose neaerly two hundred percent. This new model of the PSP features a new screen and built-in microphone, and has since been improved upon even more with the PSP Go.
