The PlayStation 3, which is also referred to as the PS3, is the third installment (following the Playstation 2) for Sony's video game console series. Sony's PlayStation 3 vies against the Nintendo corporation ( the creators of Nintendo Wii) and Microsoft (creators of the Xbox 360), both of which are part of the 7th generation in video game systems.
One critical aspect that separates Playstation 3 from its precursors is its Playstation Network, which is an amalgamated gaming service for online usage that stands above the company's original policy of dependence on game developers for online gaming. Even more significant features of this console consist of its Playstation Portable connectivity, strong multimedia proficiency and integral high-definition optical disc format, the Blu-ray Disc, for its central storage facilities. In addition, the PS3 was introduced as the first ever Blu-ray 2.0 compliant Blu-ray machine to hit the market.
In the month of November in 2006, Sony's Playstation 3 was made available to the public in Japan, North American and South America. There were two different models being sold when the PS3 first came out: one was the basic, 20 GB hard drive model; the other was a premium, 60 GB hard drive model that included a few extra features. From that point on, there have been several significant changes utilized in the console's existing models, particularly with the launch of the newer slim model in September 2009.
