The Wii, released by Nintendo, is a home video game console. The Wii is a seventh-generation console whose main competitors are the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. According to Nintendo, this console is suited to a broader demographic than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As of Dec. 31, 2008, the Wii lead the generation in global sales, topping its competition.
The wireless controller -- the Wii Remote -- is one of the most appealing features of the console; used as a hand-held aiming device, it can pinpoint movement in three directions. Another popular element of the console is the WiiConnect24, a fun feature used while in standby mode that enables messages and updates to be received over the Internet.
The Wii is the fifth video game console developed by Nintendo. It has thoroughly dominated the market since its release in 2006, though recent surveys suggest that its position is shaky and the hierarchy may change before too long.
